You were born a child of light’s wonderful secret— you return to the beauty you have always been.
We grown-up people think that we appreciate music, but if we realized the sense that an infant has brought with it of appreciating sound and rhythm, we would never boast of knowing music. The infant is music itself.
He suddenly recalled from Plato’s Symposium: People were hermaphrodites until God split then in two, and now all the halves wander the world over seeking one another. Love is the longing for the half of ourselves we have lost.
The philosophy of one century is the common sense of the next.
You can be creative in anything – in math, science, engineering, philosophy – as much as you can in music or in painting or in dance.
Somebody, said Jacques, your father or mine, should have told us that not many people have ever died of love. But multitudes have perished, and are perishing every hour–and in the oddest places!–for the lack of it.
Life is like a piano. What you get out of it depends on how you play it.
She had needed the time to know that this love would not destroy her, and I had, I now knew, given her that time, could give it, for it was what I had in great supply.
Your philosophy determines whether you will go for the disciplines or continue the errors.
Falling into ruin was a bit like falling in love: Both descents stripped you bare and left you as you were at your core. And both endings are equally painful.
Want to have a short phone call with someone? Call them at 11:55 a.m., right before lunch. They’ll talk fast. You may think you are interesting, but you are not more interesting than lunch.
The future is always on its way, but never here. That’s why you never invite it for dinner.
It’s in responsibility that most people find the meaning that sustains them through life. It’s not in happiness. It’s not in impulsive pleasure.
Even endless knowledge of the Universal Mind cannot sustain infinity as actuality. The Universal Mind cannot transform into an absolute plurality of infinity. Its purpose is to transform from one into many and to exist meaningfully. The meaning and the purpose of the Universal Mind are saved based on this limit imposed by something without any limit, the infinity.
You know, the mind is a remarkable thing. Just because you can’t see the wound doesn’t mean it isn’t hurting. It scars all the time, but it heals.
The South-wind bringsLife, sunshine and desire,And on every mount and meadowBreathes aromatic fire; But over the dead he has no power,The lost, the lost, he cannot restore; And, looking over the hills, I mournThe darling who shall not return.
A society that doesn’t know any longer how to observe every death with proper rituals, that does not know that death is not the end, but only part of the journey, has lost its way, has had the very heart of its humanity torn out.
There’s been time this whole time. You can’t kill time with your heart. Everything takes time.
Three grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.
If we imagine only our Universe as space in the ocean of nothingness, all the physical, natural forces will not affect the rest of nothingness at a far enough distance from our universe. All this nothingness would just be nothingness. If we now imagine one more universe, as ours is, there would be some impact of one on the other if they were close enough, and there would be a relationship between them so we could measure distance and have two points of reference. If we now make a giant leap of imagination, we can imagine a macro universe containing a similar number of universes as there are galaxies in ours; let’s say 100,000—1.000,000 or trillion universes, this universe would still have our universe and one million or a trillion more. This universe, at least one million times bigger than ours, would not affect the nothingness much more than a universe one million (or trillion) times smaller. The impact of this universe would be one million times larger and contaminate nothingness one million times more, but still, nothingness would be largely unaffected. The same would happen if we now imagine a universe a million times bigger than the previous one and if we continue to imagine a macro macro universe or a googolplex universe. Even a universe the size of 10googol of our own would not affect the rest of nothingness much more than ours affects it. Beyond the contamination of nothingness produced by a universe with the size of Googolplex larger than our own, the rest of nothingness would stay the same and unaffected. If all existences or universes were created again and again, along with the new ones, the rest of nothingness would still be equally unaffected and capable of accepting or inhabiting the new ones.Even if we imagine the googolplex googolplex googolplex size of anything, nothingness would still be able to accept or inhabit Everything. There is no number large enough to reach the end of nothingness. Infinity is simply endless. All these universes or an Omniverse would be space in the sense we understand it. But space would not be possible without nothingness. Regardless of the curvature of space (and time) or any imaginable physical law, the underlying reality of space would still be nothingness. Space, as we understand it, would not be possible without it.
Writing is the spectrum through which the chaos of life can be seen, studied and understood.
Too pissed off to care, Aurelia interrupted him. No, I will not wait just one moment! Piercing him with her best scary stare, she said, It surprises me that no one has pointed out your glaringly obvious agenda, so let me be the first.
When I buy a new book, I always read the last page first, that way in case I die before I finish, I know how it ends. That, my friend, is a dark side.
Conner hadn’t liked leaving the gravesite with his father still not buried. But he’d learned from his grandmother’s funeral that you have to go. It’s expected. Nobody hangs around the cemetary. Grief—a little or a lot—is tucked into your pocket and carried away.
Because you’re it, okay? I’m never gonna love anybody in the world like I love you.
The Reality of The Other Person Lies Not In What He Reveals To You, But What He Cannot Reveal To You.
Therefore, If You Would Understand Him, Listen Not To What He Says, But Rather To What He Does Not Say.
As the new spirituality begins to become the pervasive spirituality of the planet, we’ll find that we have abandoned our philosophy of contradictions in which we say we’re all one but continue to try to win.
Orion’s Question and the Breath of Frost’ ..Tonight, the horizon folds into itself, an old envelope sealed with frost. The earth leans ever so slightly, tilting its tired shoulder toward the sun as if apologizing for the distance. Above, Cassiopeia sprawls, half-reclining, her jeweled wrists dripping with the cold light of stars that have died a thousand times since we first gave them names. Her gaze cuts through the dark, dismissive and haunted all at once… What does she know that I do not!?I stood beneath the canopy of brittle air, the breath of a wind too muffled to matter pressing against my ear. The quietude of the season lodged itself deep, threading through marrow and thought alike. Somewhere distant, the faint call of an owl spilled across the night, shearing the imperturbable, and I realized this lull was not still, not empty. It swelled, pressed, expanded… an ache without center, scattering itself like seeds into the pit of me.For a moment, I thought I heard it… a hum, soft and glacial, as if the world itself were breathing from a great, aching hollow. I looked up and imagined Orion not as hunter but witness, the burning points of his form arranged into questions I could never answer. When I turned back toward the house, frost had etched a secret on the windowpane, its meaning almost within reach but blurred, as though by a single trembling hand.
A thing is only as great as the amount a person is willing to risk for it. If you are not willing to risk anything, then the thing mustn’t be so great at all.
In life, it is important to not be afraid to put yourself out there, win or lose. It is all about the spirit of challenging yourself to be open to realizing your highest potential.
I believe that the imagination is the passport we create to take us into the real world. I believe the imagination is another phrase for what is most uniquely us.
Bring the mind into sharp focus and make it alert so that it can immediately intuit truth, which is everywhere. The mind must be emancipated from old habits, prejudices, restrictive thought processes and even ordinary thought itself.
In this age of dramatic distraction, stop managing your time, start managing your focus.
True music must repeat the thought and inspirations of the people and the time.
Every day is about growing and evolving, and each day I just take it one day at a time and embrace it as it comes.
Death is the only wise advisor that we have. Whenever you feel, as you always do, that everything is going wrong and you’re about to be annihilated, turn to your death and ask if that is so. Your death will tell you that you’re wrong; that nothing really matters outside its touch. Your death will tell you, ‘I haven’t touched you yet.
I never could have done what I have done without the habits of punctuality, order, and diligence, without the determination to concentrate myself on one subject at a time.
From quiet homes and first beginning, out to the undiscovered ends, there’s nothing worth the wear of winning, but laughter and the love of friends.
I never supported violence. Before the formation of TMC, I was a member of the Congress Party. Gandhi’s Congress. Non-violence is a philosophy that runs deep.
The speculative object and the practical object of philosophy as Naturalism, science and pleasure, coincide on this point: it is always a matter of denouncing the illusion, the false infinite, the infinity of religion and all of the theologico-erotic-oneiric myths in which it is expressed.
You can’t drown yourself that simply. All good suicides involve speed and irreversibility, because the body will always move to protect itself against the sicko mind trying to do it in.
Time can be a greedy thing-sometimes it steals the details for itself.
Philosophy is at its most engaged when it is impure. What is being recovered from the Ancient Greek model is not some lost idea of philosophy’s pure essence, but the idea that philosophy is mixed up with everything else.
Those who are wise won’t be busy, and those who are too busy can’t be wise.
A tiger only needs three things to be comfortable. Lots of food, sleep, and…actually, no it’s just those two things.
It’s so egotistical to believe that we know more about someone else’s reality than they do, and such a waste of time.
Anyone who knew the word slattern was worth cultivating as a friend.
The problem with the world is that most people are living slightly ahead of reality, in a kind of confused panic mode. If they only could slow down their minds and arrive in the present moment of reality. Then, I am sure the world would be improved.
… we die, just as we were born, at the edge of a road not of our choosing.
I looked at him on the bed. He coughed once and a trail of brownish dead blood came out of his mouth and ran down the side of his chin. Then he stopped breathing. And I thought, I’ll make sure I never end up here, either.
It is one of the consolations of philosophy that the benefit of showing how to dispense with a concept does not hinge on dispensing with it.
The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.
The hours are numerous and the clock seldom measures the time that passes inside us, the real lifetime, and because of this many days can fit into a few hours, and vice versa, and numbers of years can be an imprecise measure of a man’s lifetime, he who dies at forty has perhaps actually lived much longer than he who dies at ninety.
He saw very clearly how all his life led only to this moment and all after led to nowhere at all. He felt something cold and soulless enter him like another being and he imagined that it smiled malignly and he had no reason to believe that it would ever leave.
People who say that yesterday was better than today are ultimately devaluing their own existence.
Good things don’t wait until you’re ready. Sometimes they come right before, when you’re almost there. And I figured when that happens, you can let them pass by like a bus not meant for you. Or you can get ready. So I got ready.
Kenji has a hand pressed to his mouth, desperately trying to suppress a smile. He’s shaking his head, holding up a hand in apology. And then he breaks, laughing out loud, snorting as he tries to muffle the sound. “I’m sorry,” he says, pressing his lips together, shaking his head again. “This is not a funny moment. It’s not. I’m not laughing
It is a bitter thought, how different a thing the Christianity of the world might have been, if the Christian faith had been adopted as the religion of the empire under the auspices of Marcus Aurelius instead of those of Constantine.
