I like to cook with the philosophy of using great ingredients and not altering them too much.
I know that pain is the most important thing in the universes. Greater than survival, greater than love, greater even than the beauty it brings about. For without pain, there can be no pleasure. Without sadness, there can be no happiness. Without misery there can be no beauty. And without these, life is endless, hopeless, doomed and damned. Adult. You have become adult.
The rEaL wOrLd is but a fictional place where those who have narrow minds and shallow imagination compile their oppressive ideas of what rEaLiTy only should be.
Only that day dawns to which we are awake. There is more day to dawn. The sun is but a morning star.
And one thing we know is real: horror. It is so real, in fact, that we cannot be sure it could not exist without us. Yes, it needs our imaginations and our consciousness, but it does not ask or require our consent to use them. Indeed, horror operates with complete autonomy. Generating ontological havoc, it is mephitic foam upon which our lives merely float. And, all said, we must face up to it: horror is more real than we are.
I have learnt through bitter experience the one supreme lesson to conserve my anger, and as heat conserved is transmuted into energy, even so our anger controlled can be transmuted into a power which can move the world.
A constitution that is made for all nations is made for none.
Discourse on virtue and they pass by in droves. Whistle and dance and shimmy, and you’ve got an audience!
I had a microscopic eye for the blemish, for the grain of ugliness which to me constituted the sole beauty of the object.
Ownership is not limited to material things. It can also apply to points of view. Once we take ownership of an idea — whether it’s about politics or sports — what do we do? We love it perhaps more than we should. We prize it more than it is worth. And most frequently, we have trouble letting go of it because we can’t stand the idea of its loss. What are we left with then? An ideology — rigid and unyielding.
Man looks on woman from his vantage point and reduces her to a being that is not for-itself but for-him.
Science without respect for human life is degrading to us all and reflects a hollow and deceptive philosophy, a philosophy that we as a people should never condone.
I don’t feel proprietorial about the problems of philosophy. History has taught us that many philosophical issues can grow up, leave home and live elsewhere.
If you’re a doctor, what do you promise to do? First, do no harm. If your operating philosophy is do no harm, that’s not a call to imagination. Not only that, if I’m a patient, I don’t want your imagination. I want what works.
Not all doors open in the same direction and with the same effort!
I believe that just because something didn’t go the way you planned it once, it’s no reason not to try again.
It’s about being fair. It’s about Black Lives Matter. Yes, they matter. Everybody counts or nobody counts, and I think if more cops had the philosophy of Harry Bosch, we’d have less of these situations happening.
In any business, a manager wants to surround himself with guys he knows he can trust. Guys who share his work ethic and philosophy. Guys he can count on to execute his plan.
I consider a dream like I consider a shadow,” answered Caeiro, with his usual divine, unexpected promptitude. “A shadow is real, but it’s less real than a rock. A dream is real — if it weren’t, it wouldn’t be a dream — but less real than a thing. That’s what being real is like.
Don’t you think most of those kids think too much about who got an A or a B when they were in law school and what that means to an inflated G.P.A. and not enough about the world?” asked Connor irrelevantly.
Tourism, human circulation considered as consumption is fundamentally nothing more than the leisure of going to see what has become banal.
Art and religion first; then philosophy; lastly science. That is the order of the great subjects of life, that’s their order of importance.
It is not enough to show how clever we are by showing how obscure everything is.
I am strangely tired, not from having talked so much but at the mere thought of what I still have to say
A farm regulated to production of raw commodities is not a farm at all. It is a temporary blip until the land is used up, the water polluted, the neighbors nauseated, and the air unbreathable. The farmhouse, the concrete, the machinery, and outbuildings become relics of a bygone vibrancy when another family farm moves to the city financial centers for relief.
Do you know what I think about crying? I think some people have to learn to do it. But once you learn, once you know how to really cry, there’s nothing quite like it. I feel sorry for those who don’t know the trick. It’s like whistling or singing.
The final belief is to believe in a fiction, which you know to be a fiction, there being nothing else. The exquisite truth is to know that it is a fiction and that you believe in it willingly.
Whatever it takes, the job of the director is to be the leader and to get your actors where they need to go. That’s a philosophy that I have.
Unfortunately, I’m not a person that’s always capable of living up to the Boy Scout philosophy.
Spinoza or Nietzsche are philosophers whose critical and destructive powers are without equal, but this power always springs from affirmation, from joy, from a cult of affirmation and joy, from the exigency of life against those who would mutilate and mortify life. For me, that is philosophy itself.
The true philosopher is a man who says All right, and goes to sleep in his armchair.
Fault always lies in the same place: with him weak enough to lay blame.
If disaster, so be it, they said to themselves. There was nothing to be done except what could be done. The rest — like the salt water around them, which swallowed the snow without effort, remaining what it was implacably — was out of their hands, beyond.
Soul is a colourless thing. I don’t think you have to be a black person to be automatically soulful. I respect Justin Bieber and Justin Timberlake; they do what they do. For me, my philosophy has always been ‘contribution before competition.’
The easy confidence with which I know another man’s religion is folly teaches me to suspect that my own is also.
Real philosophy is like trying to read an alarm system installation manual in Korean.
Were prayers of murderers, when fighting on the “right side” of the war, ever heard—let alone answered?
If one shifts the center of gravity of life out of life into the “Beyond” – into nothingness – one has deprived life as such of its center of gravity. The great lie of personal immortality destroys all rationality, all naturalness of instinct, all that is salutary, all that is life-furthering.
My whole working philosophy is that the only stable happiness for mankind is that it shall live married in blessed union to woman-kind – intimacy, physical and psychical between a man and his wife. I wish to add that my state of bliss is by no means perfect.
Pragmatism asks its usual question. Grant an idea or belief to be true, it says, what concrete difference will its being true make in anyone’s actual life? How will the truth be realized? What experiences will be different from those which would obtain if the belief were false? What, in short, is the truth’s cash-value in experiential terms?
One of the greatest tragedies in life is to lose your own sense of self and accept the version of you that is expected by everyone else.
Don’t feel embarrassed if you’ve never heard of William Lane Craig. He parades himself as a philosopher, but none of the professors of philosophy whom I consulted had heard his name, either.
To call yourself a “realistic” person is intensely arrogant and naïve.
For Reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; and Passion, unattended,is a flame that burns to its own destruction.
A student, filled with emotion and crying, implored, Why is there so much suffering?Suzuki Roshi replied, No reason.
The more thoroughly a person understands life, the less he will mock, though in the end he might still mock the thoroughness of his understanding.
Cancer taught me to stop saving things for a special occasion. Every day is special. You don’t have to get cancer to start living life to the fullest. My post-cancer philosophy? No wasted time. No ugly clothes. No boring movies.
I have goals and ambitions, and I see myself as a lifelong baseball student. I have certain philosophies that I’d like to test at some point at the big league level. The job of manager appeals to me, a coach appeals to me, at a different time frame.
The purpose of a moral philosophy is not to look delightfully strange and counterintuitive or to provide employment to bioethicists. The purpose is to guide our choices toward life, health, beauty, happiness, fun, laughter, challenge, and learning.
I can blend words easily with my pen, and show concepts from deep within. Yet not everyone gets the message I send. So why do I even let these words begin? Maybe they will soak in one day at the right time. When the readers on a new path to find. So for now I’ll continue to drop ink and not worry about what other people think.
A bridge of silver wings stretches from the dead ashes of an unforgiving nightmareto the jeweled vision of a life started anew.
One of the penalties of refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.
